The Maryland Agricultural Education and Rural Development Assistance Board was created in July 2000 (Chapter 552, Acts of 2000). On the basis of Board recommendations, the Department of Business and Economic Development awards grants from the Maryland Agricultural Education and Rural Development Fund. Administered by the Board of Public Works, the Fund helps rural regional planning and economic development organizations, and rural community development programs whose work has statewide implications and merits State support. The Fund also augments the efforts of advanced technology centers serving agricultural and natural resources-based small businesses in rural areas through community colleges (Code State Finance and Procurement Article, sec. 2-206).
